This is such a great resource – I’ve followed your blog for some time now and always wondered how to go about finding the styles you profile. While I live in the US I do have contacts in Mexico – do you recommend contacting the maker to order or do you have an idea of how this works? I would like to order a few pairs from different makers from the Jalisco region.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Tiffany
You or someone who speaks Spanish would have to contact the Huarachero and negotiate styles, quantity, pricing and shipping.
The Huarache Directory is an unfunded project that for now can offer only the simplest yet most cost effective assistance.
But if you have contacts in Mexico, and want to buy only a few huaraches for personal use, in some cases it might be easier to buy from retailers. I have contact information to few Huaracherias up on the Huarache Blog Facebook page.
Thanks for reading Huarache Blog!
I am so happy you have put up this Directory. Thanks kindly for answering my inquiry about Sr. A and his “Recargandos” several weeks ago. Even though I can get some huaraches from Olvera St. since I live near LA, it is great to have this resource. And I am looking forward to buying some from another Mexican huarachero.
I have one comment by which I mean no offense to you or to your other huaracherias. I am unclear why you included the German company. Their prices in Euros when converted to USD are unreal to me. I really like the “Panama”, but its cost converts to nearly USD650 all-in. I bought some traditional men’s dress shoes a few yeas ago from Maftei in Austria; they were priced well above US-made Alden or Allen Edmonds shoes, and even close to Sandals Freiburg. I justified the expense because the style is unique, and will wear for decades. Still, for German-made woven leather shoes- I can only wonder what your Mexican suppliers think.
You’re welcome.
To answer your interesting observation.
Since the German Huarachero is passionate enough to make huaraches I beleive they deserve to be supported and promoted for their passion and cultural importance.
The higher German prices help to put craft into perspective (compared to factory made goods).
Its hard to see the financial challenges self employed craftspeople face when you aren’t one.
Consider that a pair of the “Panama” can take almost a day to make well, then add the higher price of German leather, German taxes, the service of weaving each pair according to the tracing of the customer’s foot shape, naturally the price will be higher. Also footwear is much more expensive in Germany than in the USA.
Factory made footwear is made more efficiently, the product is processed as fast as possible, through hands that are specialized in one task. The factory also gets reduced rates on bulk raw material orders and chrome tanned leather is typically cheaper than vegetable tanned leather which is necessary to make Huaraches. Factories can also play more with margins and tax savings to bring prices down further.
Besides, the high cost of those quality German Huaraches only goes to show how expensive quality Mexican Huaraches are to ordinary Mexicans. Consider that in Mexico a pair of high end Mexican made dress shoes costs 500 Pesos ($40) and the most expensive and best made Huaraches sell for 1500 Pesos ($120).
If only one person is skilled enough to make a product I believe they have the right to price their skill accordingly. After all Luxury Brands are selling a simpler Huaraches for much more. In a sense CEO’s, or stock traders follow the same logic, being more specialized they have bigger bonuses; which often make a €400 Huarache look quite ordinary in comparison.
Lastly, I think its important for more people to realize how precious hand made product and crafts are. Specialized Artisans have been humble for much too long and also need to see the value in their unique crafts. By setting the bar high, hopefully the German Huarachero can help turn public opinion.
I do not speak Spanish but I would like to purchase a couple of pairs from Huaracheria Ortiz – Tuxpan, Jalisco what do you suggest. Thank you
Cassandra
Do you have any Spanish speaking friends?
I do she is a neighbor — should I have her to call?
Ask your neighbor to call, but first plan out exactly what you want to tell Armando. The Huarache Directory only facilitates contact between customers and Huaracheros, it isn’t a retailer. Sr. Ortiz may not yet know how to send you your order and may need to research shipping costs. If you aren’t familiar with international payment and shipping and cannot advise Sr. Ortiz you may need to be patient while he figures it out, but maybe in return you will be able to buy original natural tanned leather Huaraches directly from the craftsman. Good luck.
thank you I will try this first.
I dont know anybody that has done such as great job as you doing this huarache page. I love Huaraches as you dont have an idea. I have plenty of them and i am aming for 100 pairs. Thank you for adding the directory for those guys that make huaraches. BWT, i am going to buy from them some of Huaraches
Thanks Jose, I do what I can. I will keep adding Huaracheros and their phone numbers as I come across them.
I am looking for a manufacturer of huarache sandals to buy from in Mexico. Where can I find them in Jalisco or Baja?
Hi Roxy, you have found them. All the craftspeople/manufacturers I know are on this directory. For high volume orders I can recommend looking in the Michoacan section, specifically the town of Sahuayo. P.S. your ketchemnkillem email address is a little scary. Best regards, Markus
Hello I am interested in someone who can make custom leather sandals. Can you point me in the right direction?
Hi Melissa, simply choose a style that you think is closest to what you envisage and give the artisan a call.
Quiero unoss que hago?
Escribí todos los teléfono de los Huaracheros..llamalos! 🙂
how much dinero for pihuamo?
Hi Lance, although the Huarache Directory is more of a trade facilitator between retailer and artisan, please feel free contact any artisan who’s work you like, because many artisans also make individual Huaraches to order.
The contact information for each artisan is provided at no cost above the photos of their Huaraches.
Kind regards 🙂
I was interested in some of the huaraches they have on this website. But am I able to trust the retailer with payment info?.
Hi Celeste, I have not listed any retailers on The Huarache Directory, they are exclusively artisans. Honestly some may have to figure out how to process your order and ask a friend to lend them their bank account, while others may only want to sell wholesale quantities. The Huarache Directory is intended to expose traditional artisans to e-commerce, because most are so traditional that they don’t see the benefits of the internet. They never asked me to be in the directory, rather I had to persuade them it could help their business. Give them a call and see what they say. Maybe you can even build a business relationship. If you are looking for Huarache Retailers check out Huarache Blog on Facebook where I have quite a few listed. Thanks for looking 🙂
I see the advertisement on UKATA “coming soon”
What’s coming soon? ? I’ve been waiting all summer for results
? ? ? ?
Hi Ray, hopefully the best Huaraches. But its taking a little longer than expected because we’re having to re-learn how to make high quality leather footwear. Maybe just one more month. Stay tuned 🙂
Hi, great infos in your blog.
Do you reckon if I call up one of these vendors, will they be able to speak English?
Cheers!
Hi Paolo, the artisans don’t speak English, most don’t even use email. While I can appreciate that this is quite inconvenient, its also more authentic. I think that if they did they did know english and email, they probably wouldn’t still be making traditional footwear. Some know facebook and their Huarache styles are also more “modern”. Good luck 🙂
To answer your question if these vendors speak English. We have so much technology at our hands that’s it makes your head spin. You can download the Spanish translation app and converse with Spanish.
It worked for me and I strongly recommend it. Don’t be so lazy! !
Your blog is an amazzzzing resource. I live in Australia and I’m fascinated by these stunning shoes! The stories you’ve worked so hard to capture are truly inspiring and make me appreciate this gorgeous craft so much more.
I have been looking for suppliers of these shoes for a little while now, and I am so glad i’ve found this page. As you can imagine, it is not easy sifting through the Mexican google results when you don’t speak Spanish haha.
Just a thank you from the other side of the world 🙂
Dear Hannah, thank you for your kind words!
hey, i found your blog a month ago, and i am really motivated to go to mexico and learn how they do those amazing huaraches. do you think it is possible to take contact with one of the shoemakers? have a happy day, theoa
Yes, its possible to contact them, but they are quite busy, at times disorganized and prefer face to face communication. I would suggest you call them to introduce yourself and ask their address, but leave most of the negotiating for when you meet them personally.
Cuánto cuestan los de etatillo
No se, usted tiene que telefonar a los artesanos y preguntar. Gracias
hi to all of you artisans and customers im looking to buy a pair (one or more) of huarache sandals but the only think i have is two fotos of the style i didnt find them anywhere is anybody can help ? the only think i know about them is that ,they are originals from mexico thanks petros

Now and then I do add new Artisans that I discover on the internet, for example there are some new Huarache Artisans in Italy and in the Canary Islands of Spain. For more updates and new Huarache Artisans please also check Huarache Blog on Instagram.
